SLS Georgia 2018

unnamed (6)

After the remarkable success of our flagship 2017 program in Tbilisi, Georgia, we will be returning in 2018, from July 1528 .  The rich literary tradition and culture of Georgia has inspired countless international poets and writers, including Osip Mandelstam, Boris Pasternak, and Marina Tsvetaeva, among others.

Tbilisi is a cobblestoned city situated at the crossroads of Eastern Europe and Western Asia. Georgia boasts unspoiled natural beauty, from the beaches of the black Sea to the heights of the Caucasus Mountains. Land of mythical Jason and the Golden Fleece, the world’s first cultivated vineyards and winemaking, and the whimsical folk art of Pirosmani, its residents are known for their warm hospitality. Named one of the best places to travel in 2017 by Vogue magazine, Tbilisi has emerged as a premier destination for arts, culture, and gastronomy in the past few years.

Continuing in the SLS tradition, our program in Georgia will foster cultural exchange and lifelong friendships. Participants will work closely with Georgian literary figures and international writers. To this end, our base in Tbilisi will be the Writer’s House of Georgia, a breathtaking Art Nouveau mansion and cultural centre.

The 2018 program will again feature:

  • intensive workshops led by stellar SLS instructors
  • 1-1 consultations with writers and editors in residence
  • talks about local literary culture and politics from experts in the field
  • readings from both our own faculty and from guests
  • visits to the Literary Museum of Georgia and other museums of interest
  • day trips to nearby locations, e.g. the caucus mountains and monastery in Kazbegi and the ancient cave city of Uplistsikhe

For the intensive workshops, our faculty includes such luminaries as

  • Tara Isabella Burton
  • Jonathan Garfinkel
