See below for more on the facilities. ACCOMMODATIONS SLS, and the city of Vilnius, offers a range of accommodations options for participants to choose from. A wide array or shops, cafes, breakfast places and other eateries are in the immediate vicinity. NOTE: SLS assistants pick up every participant at the airport, take people to their accommodations, and give them an orientation tour of the immediate area. Assistants also take people to the Institute, (at least in the beginning). No one ever gets lost with the SLS programs -- not at the airport, and not in the city... unless they want to get lost in the city, at some point. Vilnius, especially the central part of it, is an eminently walkable, immensely beautiful city, made for solitary walks through the narrow menadering crooked streets of medieval Old Town. Please view a partial list of possible accommodations, below. *
Various short-term apartments and hotels are also available, and a selection is listed below. Please note that the center of Old Town (Cathedral Square) is a short bus ride (two stops) or a fifteen minute walk from the Institute. If you need any help finding accommodations, we'd be pleased to help you. Just contact us. THE INSTITUTE OF LANGUAGE AND LITERATURE is located in the scenic Antakalnis area of Vilnius, two bus stops or a fifteen minute walk from the center of Old Town (Cathedral Square). In a picturesque location not far from the Art Institute, the Institute of Language and Literature overlooks the banks of the wide river Neris, adjacent to the breathtaking Cathedral of St. Peter and Paul. Although it looks rather simple from the outside, this church has the most beautiful interior of any in Lithuania. The stucco work inside has more than 2000 human figures, with thousands more of plants and animals. The interior was done by Italian artists in the 17th century. The two buildings of the Institute of Language and Literature were designed by August Klein and erected in 1904-1906 by the engineer Petras Vileišis. In 1931 they were redesigned by the wealthy Vileišis family and by 1932, had become the center of Lithuanian culture: the LSS (1907-1940) and historical Rytas Society were located here. The second house, by the street, provided space for a printing house, where News of Vilnius, edited by P. Vileišis, was published. The building also housed one of the first shops to buy Lithuanian books. In 1907, the first exhibition of Lithuanian art was held here. From 1941 on, the buildings have been the property of the Academy of Sciences of Lithuania and have been declared architectural monuments. The Institute of Language and Literature was formally founded in 1952. In 1953 the Institute of Folklore began operations. It was not until 1990 that the two Institutes were merged into the present research facility. The current Institute houses 68 staff members. Scientific members of the Institute undergo rigorous competition and must reapply every five years. Bring plug adapters for all your electrical appliances, such as laptop computers, which are available at most any electronics stores. |
