Fees and payment schedule
For participants attending either Session 1 or Session 2, the program fee is $1550 USD. For participants attending both sessions, the program fee is $2550 USD. We require a $150 USD deposit to complete your application and to secure your place on the program. A second payment of $300 is due by September 10, 2018, and the remaining balance of the program fee must be received by November 15, 2018. Any exceptions must be negotiated with the Program Coordinator. Please note that unless payments are made on schedule, we cannot guarantee a place in the program.
Program costs pay for faculty honorariums and location fees, amongst other built-in costs. Please note that the fees do not include meals (unless indicated), accommodations, and transportation to, from, and within Kenya (unless stated).
For Session 1 (Loita Hills), tuition fees include transportation to and from Nairobi and our site in Loita Hills, as well as a full-day Safari during our stay there. In Loita Hills, full board (three meals a day) is included in accommodation costs.
For Session 2 (Lamu), tuition fees include partial costs for return flights from Nairobi-Lamu for up to $120. In Nairobi and Lamu, half board (breakfast) is included in accommodation costs.

Fellowships and financial aid
Fellowships are available through our Fiction and Poetry Contest. In addition, a limited number of needs-based fellowships are available. Please submit a short statement of need (2-3 paragraphs) and any supporting documents (optional) to the Program Coordinator at firstname.lastname@example.org. You may also wish to look into other sources of funding.
Policies, cancellations and refunds
SLS is offering this program in partnership with Kwani?, a Kenyan-based literary organization. Please note that in cases where it is not pre-arranged as part of the program, SLS will not assume responsibility for participants’ accommodations and travel. We will, however, offer assistance in finding suitable accommodations.
All monies will be refunded in full to students who are not accepted into the program, or, if for any reason, the program is cancelled.
All payments (excepting the deposit) are fully refundable if a participant withdraws from the program voluntarily by November 1, 2018. A cancellation fee of $500 USD will be assessed for any cancellation after November 1, 2018. After December 1, only recoverable costs will be refunded, less the $500 USD cancellation fee. No refunds will be made once the program starts, regardless of the student’s participation.
The effective date of cancellation will be the date that such written notice is received by the Program Coordinator.
We require that you obtain travel insurance before your trip. Many SLS participants go with United Healthcare (formally MEDEX) (www.uhcsafetrip.com) or Patriot (https://purchase.imglobal.com/Quote/patriot/pre-quote?imgac=182036), though please research the best option for you.
We also recommend that you obtain travel insurance that makes flight refundable, in case of any exigencies.
Vaccinations and medical advice
We don’t give medical advice and recommend participants be guided by appropriate pages on official government websites.
We require that participants sign and bring to Kenya a liability waver form. Forms will be sent to you by the program coordinator in advance of the program.
Your privacy is important to us. We will never rent, sell or disclose your information to any third parties.
